Immersive Experiences Writing Workshop

Helping young writers find their voice

Two Shrews Press is proud to partner with Lauren Mauel’s Academic Coaching to bring real-life publishing experiences to children. Follow along with the downloadable curriculum, order workbooks, and let students discover the mechanics and joys of writing, rewriting, and getting published firsthand.

Originally developed for students learning English and piloted in the Somali-American community in Minneapolis, the Writing Workshop is suitable for all children grades K-8, in school and community group settings.

Simulation, or the process of 'playing pretend,' allows children to begin to 'see themselves' in various careers and positions. The more that we can engage children in high-level projects and tasks, the greater the likelihood that children will have the confidence to pursue careers that will challenge them.

The teaching manual guides educators and leaders through a twelve-week program of cultural exploration and pedagogical reflection related to the student writing prompts. The student notebook gives young writers a place to gather their thoughts and respond to the prompts. Writing Workshop is not only about practicing writing. It's about inspiring young people with new reasons to write, empowering them through the immersive experience of being authors, and rewarding their efforts with a professionally produced book. At the same time, it gives educators and leaders new tools to better connect with their students.
